Medium is the Massage is a series of collages made by intervening in the pages of Marshall McLuhan’s The Medium Is the Massage with photographs from my personal archive and everyday life. Rather than illustrating McLuhan’s ideas, I place fragments of people, places, and ordinary objects into the book’s existing images, texts, and visual structures. These interventions bring together elements that do not originally belong to one another, shifting the way both the original page and the inserted image can be read. The work explores how meaning changes when an image is displaced and encountered within another system of images, texts, and memories.
