Knowing Eye

The Knowing Eye
The Knowing Eye is a series of digital montages made from photographs accumulated in my personal archive between 2011 and 2019. I bring photographs taken at different times and places together to create situations that never existed as photographed. The images retain the visual quality and familiarity of photography, while the situations they depict can be obviously impossible or deliberately absurd. This tension is important to the work. I am interested in how quickly we trust what we see, recognize relationships between things, and turn fragments into a coherent situation. Even when we can see that an image has been constructed, we may still find ourselves trying to make sense of it. The title The Knowing Eye refers not only to the eye that sees but also to the eye that thinks it knows. The work invites us to pay attention to this process, to how looking becomes interpretation and how we actively construct what we think we see.
