Belanda Sudah Dekat! / The Dutch are Approaching!
The Dutch Are Approaching! is a photographic series that stages a condition of heightened alertness within everyday social environments. The work draws from an Indonesian colloquial expression—once used to calm anxiety, “the Dutch are still far away”—and inverts it into a warning: the Dutch are approaching. When inviting participants, the artist posed a simple proposition: what if the Dutch are approaching? Across the series, various communities in Yogyakarta—ranging from aerobics instructors and bodybuilding groups to fan-based subcultures—are photographed in their own environments while holding brightly colored water guns. Their gestures suggest an imminent threat, yet the objects remain playful, empty, and non-functional.What unfolds is not conflict, but a simulation of readiness—an echo that no longer points to a single historical moment. A personal memory lingers: being woken as a child by a sudden splash of water, an awakening that remains as a latent trigger, even in its absence. The work ask: what if vigilance persists beyond its origin, quietly aligning with new forms of control?
