Wimo Ambala Bayang

Stone That Are Far From Innocent

Installation

Wimo Ambala’s video installation responds to these incidents and the still tense climate in the multiethnic state. The artist placed, side-by-side, two volcanic stones from the area around Yogyakarta that recall the nearby volcano Merapi. He installed two peepholes in the stones, like a pair of eyes, through which the viewer can watch two different videos. One shows a fictional stoning scene from Martin Scorsese’s film The Last Temptation of Christ (1988(, while the other shows a YouTube clip from July 29, 2010 of men from different religious denominations actually throwing stones at each other on the street of Aceh.
